Fuel cells produce electricity from a wide variety of chemical reactions promoted by a chemical catalyst. The process is generally a hydrogen-oxygen reaction that generates water as by-product. There are many types of such fuel cells, with operating temperatures ranging from 70 °C to 1000 °C.
Applications using fuel cells are generally characterized by a demand for low and clean emissions, low noise, high efficiency, or long-term energy storage requirements. Examples include spacecraft, auxiliary power units for military or mobile use, decentralized urban power generation, or simply high-tech, green electricity and heat production.
