Unitary and residential/light commercial systems are predominantly direct expansion systems that remove heat from non-pressurized air. The compactness of the BPHE make it a less suitable heat exchanger for this purpose. However, the BPHE could be to increase the system efficiency by exploiting it as economizer, internal heat exchanger, or sub-cooler, and/or for heat recovery.
